Yorkshire Dales Coach Ramble, Sunday 29 September
“A” Walk – Great Whernside. 9 miles, 1760ft total climbing.
Leaders Ros Wade and Joan Hancock
“B” Walk – Kilnsey to Kettlewell. 8 miles, 500ft climbing.
Leaders Malcolm and Cath Mackay
“A” walk is a circular based on Kettlewell village. From the village there is a sustained and steep climb of 1600ft to the top of Great Whernside, where hopefully you will be rewarded with views in all directions. Yor Dike gives a grand view straight down Wharfedale. The descent to Starbotton is steep, loose and rocky in places, then we follow the Dalesway alongside the River Wharfe back into Kettlewell.
“B” walk begins at Kilnsey Crag; an iconic feature of Wharfedale and after crossing the river at Conistone village takes a gently rising track to join the Dalesway above Grassington. This stretch includes a rather interesting limestone gorge and some quaint corners. We then follow the Dalesway to Kettlewell through typical upland grazing and occasional limestone scars. Now the track is level and easy underfoot which makes a pleasant walk. The views across Old Cote Moor and up the neighbouring valley of Littondale are excellent in good light, as is that up the full length of Upper Wharfedale before we drop down into the valley and take a field path into Kettlewell.
There are two pubs and two good tea rooms in Kettlewell. (no group arrangements have been made). Do have a look at the unusual graves in the churchyard.
