Sunday September 30th Coach Ramble to Staithes/Whitby area
0800 – coach leaves from Arundel Gate (Howard Street). The journey to Staithes will be non-stop. Coffee will probably be on the quay at Staithes.
A Walk – 12 miles, Leaders John and Joan Taylor
B Walk – 9 miles, Leaders Malcolm and Cath MacKay
Route Both walks will start at Staithes and follow the Cleveland Way along the coast. A party will walk all the way into Whitby whilst B party will be met by the coach at Sandsend and driven into Whitby. Hopefully there will be time for everyone to buy fish and chips at the end.
This is an undulating coastal walk with some extensive views (if the weather is fine!!). We pass Captain Cook’s house in Staithes, the remains of the old ironstone harbour at Port Mulgrave, beautiful Runswick Bay and the cliffs at Kettleness where there was once a Roman signal station. Finally we walk along part of the old mineral railway route into Sandsend. There is evidence of ironstone mining at several points en route.
